The History of the Tavern Signs
The history of tavern signs is really quite interesting. Long before official street numbers marked business establishments, the tavern sign stood out as a beacon to those passing by who were thirsty, hungry and tired enough to want to sleep at the often adjacent inn. Tavern signs were colorful, painted on carved wood and were often embellished with all sorts of decorative items - even stuffed animal heads! The common thread of these tavern signs from centuries ago was the fact that there were usually no words, only pictures on the sign. This “advertising” decision was based on one simple fact — the overwhelming majority of folks in these times hundreds of years ago could not read. So, the pictorial signs were meant to create a memorable image with everyone who walked by.
As time passed, some taverns or pubs did begin to list their name upon a shingle hung outside to attract customers. Often these taverns were named after a location, a governing entity, the publican himself, or colloquial sayings of the time. More modern takes on these same names have become puns such as “Pig and Whistle” for the phrase “piggin wassail” meaning “to be in good health”. Or, the pub “Bacchanals” transformed over time to be called the “Bag of Nails”.
Old-world inspired tavern and pub signs continue to be a popular way to decorate bars. In fact, the trend extends to home bars where these nostalgic gifts for men are often given for birthdays, Father’s day and other special occasions. Tavern and pub signs are ideal as gifts for men, especially because they come in hundreds of styles that capture virtually every interest and hobby a guy could possibly have. From football, baseball and other sports themes to Vegas, poker and gambling versions, some of the most popular choices as gifts for guys are the good old-fashioned Irish pub signs with lucky clovers, leprechauns and the works. Most of these gifts for men can be personalized in a clever way. For example, the recipient’s name would be listed as the “proprietor” along with a chosen “establishment date”. Painted to look weathered and time-honored, these gifts for men will make any corner of the house look like a long-lost spot for kicking back with a pint of ale.
