Making Oboe Reeds: Creating the “Shell”
Scraping an oboe reed blank is a little like creating a shell for the reed to live in. It isn’t really an oboe reed yet, but it has to be a good enough shell so that the reed can eventually take shape within it. It seems like a rather abstract idea now, so just remember… Your initial goal is to just get some cane off the reed.
All that hard shiny cane must go for the reed to vibrate. Although this part of oboe
reed making is not very detailed, you will have to learn basic knife control to get the
shiny cane off. Of course, practice makes perfect.
As your reed making skill improves, however, don’t let yourself get bogged down
with this step. I have seen may experienced reed making students take such care
and time with this part - the “getting the cane off” part. It is not necessary!
Eventually you want to get the rough cane off as quick and as easily as possible.
Someone that knows nothing about oboe reed making could learn to do this
efficiently and consistently with just a little practice.
Although you will probably end of finishing your reeds while they are wet, I like to
scrape blanks (up until the point where I clip the tip) when they are pretty dry. That
is just my preference because I don’t feel that the actual blank scraping is the
detailed part.
Again, you are just making a reed shell right now. You will have to experiment with
how hard you press when you are scraping. It isn’t something I can explain in words
except to say you always want to use the least amount of pressure possible so that
you don’t crack the cane.
Your right hand is just going to move the knife, it is your left hand that will anchor
and apply pressure when you need it. You will figure many of these things out for
yourself. Even a private reed making teacher wouldn’t be able to actually feel how
much pressure you are using. And it is a totally individual thing anyway.
So take your blank and mark 68 mm. A finished reed will be about 69-70 mm, so I
like to start scraping my tip at about 68. Don’t forget to keep that picture of each
side of the oboe reed separated by the important spine.
With your knife, you are going to do at least 15 scrapes of the tip on each side of
the spine. Start at the line you drew and let’s do the left side first. Draw your knife
up and all the way to the very end of tip so that it goes off the end.
This is a very important habit to create.
You always want to scrape the tip and get used to going off the very end. Once you
do about 15 scrapes on the left side of the tip, do the right side. Then turn the reed
over and do the same exact thing on the flipside.
When you are done you will have rough scraped the tip of the oboe reed!
Now onto rough scraping the body of the reed.
We’re going to apply the same concept you used on the tip and scrape all the way
from a few millimeters above the string up until the heart starts, probably about 65
mm. Again you are going to honor the spine, and when you are done with this part
there will be a visible spine that you have made down the entire reed. Do about
10-12 of these scrapes on all 4 sides of the reed. You should have taken off a good
deal of cane by now.
If you barely see any cane on your table, you are probably not pressing hard
enough. These rough scrapes need to remove cane, not just caress it. There is no
way a reed is going to vibrate if it has tons and tons of heavy cane on it.
Sometimes I am ready to clip at this point. But most of the time I go back to the tip
and kind of repeat what I already did - 15 scrapes on each side of the spine and
then again on the flipside.

Toss a Garter or Two
The tempo of the music begins to rise. Drums begin to throb. The bride and groom rise. Yet another ritual begins. Removing the garter from the bride’s usually hidden leg.
If she’s lucky, the garter will be removed with decorum and tossed among the bachelors waiting patiently nearby. If the wine and hard liquor has been flowing lavishly and abundantly for the past five hours, some sadistic youth will grab the groom, tie his hands behind his back with the tie which, a minute ago was around the groom’s neck, and force the groom to remove the garter by the only means available to him. His teeth.
While there’s a lot of grinding of guests’ teeth at this unpalatable bit of ribaldry, the action is pretty close to what would have happened couple of hundred years ago.
When it came to weddings in days gone by, guests viewed the bride and groom very much like today’s fans view their favourite movie stars. In “Singing in the Rain”, Gene Kelly had almost his shirt torn off him by frantic fanatical fans. This scene could very well represent what happened at some of those wild weddings of the past.
Trying to anticipate, the well to do bride and groom would come prepared. Their pockets might be filled with gold coins to throw at the more boisterous of the guests. There were also gifts of kid gloves for the more refined. The bride might even stick bits of ribbon, lace and flowers over her clothes for those guests who had a tendency to grab at anything that looked as if it could be detached with ease.
But when all that could be given was given, and the hordes still bayed for more, than the bride had better be nimble and quick with those garters, or else she might be disconcerted by the number of foreign hands crawling up her leg.
It was no use for the bride to appeal to them with, “Look, just take one, OK? I’d like to keep the other one as a memento of the wedding.” No. It was fling one garter as fast as she could, and remove the other one while the men scrambled for the first one.
By this time, running as fast as she could, she might reach the steps of the carriage. With one last mighty heave the other garter, like Atalanta’s golden apple, would sail through the air to slow down those insatiable guests, long enough for her to jump in the carriage and away.
And they talk about the good old days!

The Math of Foreclosure
Oftentimes, consumers will need to choose between filing for insolvency or permitting their home loan lender to foreclose on their home. If monthly mortgage payments are not received, the financial institution may file a foreclosure on the home. The single guaranteed way to halt this from occurring is to pay the mortgage lender on time. It is exactly the very same for all who have not paid his mortgage; the mortgage holder will foreclose on the home. House loans are much like car loans, if you do not make your monthly payments you can lose it.
Insolvency proceedings are a legal act that is filed by somebody who cannot pay their debts. If the late payer is in the process of bankruptcy then all current civil proceedings associated with the home loan will be halted. Legally, a home loan lender has to stop all collection processes, including foreclosure. However, a lender might ask for relief from the automatic stay period, and if it is granted, can go on with the foreclosure action. Declaring Bankruptcy will not halt foreclosure and you still must repay your home loan. Going into bankruptcy only makes the foreclosure continue slowly, it can not solve the original problems.
While insolvency is not going to permanently end foreclosure, it gives an individual time to repay the overdue portions or at least it will make it little bit more accessible to repay the mortgage lender. Bankruptcy requires that a home loan lender to put a hold on foreclosure actions, a mortgage payer will have a short time to produce the cash necessary to pay back the lender. Legal bankruptcy is a last option for all borrowers. This will eventually happen when they are completely incapable of meeting their creditor’s commitments. With bankruptcy, some non-secured debt will in all likelihood be discharged but the mortgage will not be cleared. The home loan borrower must be ready to repay the home loan inside the allotted time as the debt is secured by an asset. In addition, chapter thirteen insolvency has a schedule of fees that will be court ordered, that will permit the home owner make payments on his real estate loan to get caught up to date on their balance.
Before the home owner can file for bankruptcy, they must qualify. If they do qualify, there will be legal fees to pay. Possibly, it might cost you more in legal fees than if they were to just pull the belt tighter and pay the late home loan payments. If you are of the mind that declaring bankruptcy can be helpful for the situation, an attorney should be capable of answering whatever questions. Because bankruptcy is extremely detailed, the home owner ought not attempt to do it without help from a a lawyer.

Key Elements of Catch and Release
Fishing is becoming so popular that the demand often exceeds the capabilities of Alberta streams and lakes to produce adequate numbers of fish. Mortality must be kept low to in order to maintain and recover fish populations, the release of fish is an important tool to allow anglers to enjoy their sport, yet minimize the impact on fish populations. As an avid fly fisherman, and the father of two very enthusiastic teenage fisherman, I believe all fisherman should follow catch and release practices, to help relieve the angling pressures, and to ensure the success in this ever growing popular sport. All across Alberta, fish stocks have been managed by size limits and possession limits in order to help prevent the exhaustion of our fisheries. Without limits, our rivers and lakes would be not nearly as productive as they are today, and with the help of Alberta Fish and Wildlife Association, and the individual fishermen, together we can insure a bountiful stock for future generations to come.
There are a few simple rules to follow if you would like to be a successful Catch and Release fisherman, the number one rule is the use of barbless hooks. A single point barbless hook, although they make it easier for the fish to get away, they cause less damage and are easier to remove especially if the fish is hooked in a sensitive area as the eye, gills or deep in it’s throat. To increase your chance of landing a fish using barbless hooks, they should be kept razor sharp at all times.
Play your fish quickly so that after you have landed it, the fish will have enough reserve energy to recover. The use of a good Catch and Release net will help to increase the chances the fish has to survive, and try to keep the fish in the water while you remove the hook. This will both minimize contact with the fish, and provide it with valuable oxygen that may have been depleted. If you must handle the fish, wet your hands first and try not to squeeze it, a good way to hold the fish is upside down as this will temporarily immobilize it. Never use your fingers to remove hooks always use forceps or pliers to gently remove hooks.
After the battle of getting your fish into your net and the stress of removing the hook, a fish may need some help to recover before it is released. When releasing a fish, try to release it in slow water with the head facing towards the current so that it can regain its strength and equilibrium, this will also help in forcing water through the gills helping to supply fresh oxygen. Never release an exhausted fish until the gills are working normally and the fish gains enough strength to swim away.
As an angler I always limit my catch, and if every angler would play a part in some level of Catch and Release, it would help to ensure a productive fishery for future generations to enjoy.

Contemporary African Original Oil Paintings
African art is not just ethnic and traditional, it is contemporary as well. Over the last 40 years, contemporary African artists have come into the limelight with their superb quality art. African art has thus moved beyond traditional art culture of masks, pottery items and wildlife paintings to witness a thriving contemporary art culture.
The beginning of contemporary African art took place in the 1950’s and 1960’s for which credit goes to artists such as Irma Stern, Cyril Fradan and Walter Battiss. Some of the notable contemporary artists whose works are dedicated to African art include names such as Marlene Dumas, Kendell Geers, Olu Oguibe, William Kentridge, Zerihun Yetmgeta, Yinka Shonibare, Lubaina Himid, Odhiambo Siangla and Bill Bidjocka.
In the contemporary African art world, a perfect blending of the past art forms with modern touches can be noticed.
African art developed a new dimension when the contemporary artists began to experiment with a wide variety of materials, forms and styles to show the complexity of African cultures and traditions. In fact the past traditional values and regional cultures became the groundwork for the modern artists. The end result is a fascinating art form that highlights the present scenario of the continent while evoking a rich cultural past.
While the meaning behind any traditional African art such as original oil paintings, masks etc was easy to recognize, the contemporary versions include mostly allusions and references to the past. Moreover, a greater use of personal preferences can also be noticed. The creative freedom seen in the works of the contemporary artists was not present in the ancient art forms.

5 Ways to Make Online Forums More Useful
Many people advise that you go to forums in order to promote your business. All well and good unless… Unless that’s all you do there. I’ve watched what seems to be a mistake made by lots of folks who don’t see some of the real potential in these forums. Some people seem to post anything, no matter how trivial, just to leave their link for people to follow. Maybe this can have some limited success if you’re really good at leaving links that generate clicks.
But no matter how good you may be at that, a good forum can be so much more if you’ll open your mind and eyes. Here are 5 ways that I have used with great benefit. I believe you can benefit, as well.
1 - Use them for ideas.
Forums can be incredible idea holes. There are some people who seemingly have a vital need to radiate good ideas like the sun radiates heat. You’ll find one or two people (sometimes a lot more) like this in every good forum. And you’re missing a lot if you don’t take advantage of it.
2 - In addition to getting ideas, you can use forums as antennas to learn about about resources, products, and services.
You can then do write ups about them to create ORIGINAL CONTENT on your site. This will increase the stickiness of your site and build your credibility as a marketer. Give this one a try for sure!
3 - Use them to learn how people communicate in writing.
This is very important because in internet marketing nearly EVERYTHING you communicate is via writing. Look for cool ways of saying things. Find out if new jargon is getting used. But most of all, find the people who seem to be most persuasive and study how they use their words and phrasing. Learn from them.
4 - Use forums to get great deals on things you don’t know you want!
I have secured free lifetime memberships in various places where the owner asked for feedback before he or she launched. In return for this valuable feedback, I got my lifetime membership. These things don’t necessarily come along every day or even every week. But if you explore the forums on a consistent basis, you’ll definitely get in on some really great deals. And if these things take off, they become incredibly valuable.
5 - Use them to see who’s out there that you might be able to hook up with.
Not just for joint ventures, but for master mind groups (the kind that Napoleon Hill talked about). If they give you a URL to their website, this is essentially an invitation to strike up a conversation. Go ahead. They’ll tell you whether they’re interested or not. I’ve developed some very good friendships and business relationships by doing just this very thing.
As you can see, forums can and should be used for much more than just driving traffic back to your site. Useful as that is, you’re simply missing very important benefits if that’s all you do.

Winning the Traffic Exchange Game
Winning the traffic exchange game can be done. I was just starting out online and had no money so I was looking for a free way to drive traffic to my site. That is when I first found traffic exchanges. I found the concept to be great and signed up for everyone I found and started clicking and clicking and clicking. After countless hours, a blistered clicking finger and a lot of frustration I found the secret to the game.
Traffic Is What They Want
The members clicking for hits at the traffic exchanges are looking for the same thing you are. Traffic to there site. Most are not interested in finding a new opportunity or looking to go shopping they just want traffic. So how do you get their business? The most effective way is by using a lead capture page.
Lead Capture Page
A lead capture page is a simple site that stands out to the surfer. The object is to not sell your product or information but to create curiosity. At the bottom of the page you will need a form so people can request more information from you. By nature we are curious people so people will sign up.
The people that are surfing for hits have 30 seconds on average to review your site it is hard to sell a product in 30 seconds but it is pretty easy to peak someone’s curiosity. You can see the page I use in the traffic exchanges at: http://www.dreams2freedom.com/listbuilder.html
Follow Up
O.K. I have a lead capture page but were do I send the people that sign up? An autoresponder. An autoresponder is a program that will automatically follow up with your prospects for you. You can create a number of different messages and have them sent at different intervals to your prospect after they signup through your lead capture page. This is a great tool because it puts your business on auto pilot after you do the initial work to get the lead. The autoresponder I use is GetResponse It is feature-rich and free to set up. You can check it out at: http://www.GetResponse.com/index/dreams2freedom
Now that you have an autoresponder you are going to write detailed instructions on how you product works or a report on how you product can benefit the subscriber and split it into at least 5 emails. Most people will not buy on the first contact so you want to give the subscriber at least 5 exposures. You can see an example of what I use by sending a blank email to: traffic_machine@GetResponse.com. Now set the messages to be sent 3 days apart and watch the sales start coming in.
Capture Leads Not Sales
In conclusion winning the traffic exchange game is fairly simple, don’t try to sell your products just create curiosity and capture their name and email. Have a solution to a problem people have and you will get people begging you for more information.
Hint: People at traffic exchanges want more traffic.

What Traits Is The Employer Looking for in a Personality Quiz?
The pre-employment personality quiz is a common thing today. Most of employers make it a part of the interview. This type of personality quiz is designed to match candidates with job vacancies and predict the likelihood of that candidate thriving in that particular business’ culture. The major things that an employer usually wants to find out about you are:
- stress resistance - It’s really important when the job is connected with fast decision making and working with people in stressful conditions.
- stability - Our surrounding has been too unstable lately. And this trait in your character may give you some extra points.
- consistency in actions -It looks like the previous one. But it reflects more your way of thinking, your logic, and your behavior in everyday working process.
- individuality - When the number of staff is rather big, it’s really important not to get lost your individuality and not to fall under influence of the rest.
- creative approach to problems solution - Creativity is necessary not just for projects in design, advertising, and copywriting, etc.
- sense of humor and sociability - These traits are more likely to come out during personal conversation. Commonly your interviewer asks to specify some details or give more explicit answer. It’s about time to open up your best traits.
